Violin Lessons

I offer private violin lessons in the comfort of my in-home studio in Superior, Colorado. I utilize the Suzuki method which is based on the principle that every child can learn. The Suzuki method offers a wonderful framework for teaching that can be adapted to meet each student’s individual needs to spark their interest and develop a love of music. I tailor each lesson to your child’s age, learning style and weekly progress.

Some of the key ideas in the Suzuki philosophy are…

Mother Tongue Method: It’s natural for children to learn to speak before they learn to read. They learn to speak by hearing mom and dad saying the same words to them over and over again. Later they learn to read written words and understand how they relate to the spoken word. In my studio, students learn their first pieces of music by ear. This allows them to start playing and enjoying music quickly and allows them to focus on developing good technique. Daily listening to recordings of this music develops aural skills, intonation and memory which all lead to a high comfort level with the violin. Note reading is introduced separately but in a timely manner. Then the two are brought together.

Suzuki Triangle: The Suzuki Triangle refers to the student, teacher and the parent who acts as the at-home teacher.  This triangle of support is important for success. The parent attends lessons and takes notes on the skills that need attention for the coming week. The parent learns along with the student so they understand how to help their child at home. As the student matures, the parent can step back a bit to allow the student to take on more responsibility.

Group lessons: Making music together with your friends is fun and a great motivator! It also teaches students how to lead, follow and play as an ensemble. Group classes are also great opportunities for learning other types of non-Suzuki music and playing games that reinforce technique, music theory and learning repertoire. Group classes are available with enrollment in the Boulder Suzuki Strings program.
